Well, whether the purpose of an upcoming home painting project is in your DIY collection or you want to save money, painting tools are essential. With years of experience building my own house as well as the knowledge gained from some experts, I believe the list below will give you the most sensible options.
Are you wondering because you are afraid the result will not be as expected? Rest assured, I also added some little content about how to avoid unnecessary errors while painting. So why hesitate any longer?
What Are the Tools Used for Painting?
In order to make quality wall repainting, the tools for house painting below contribute significantly to the perfect results:
Sandpaper
You know, the use of sandpaper is to smooth out uneven surfaces. When painting the wall, the surface needs a certain level of smoothness. Otherwise, the paint layer will be rough, concave, or sunken and cause unsightly fence.
Therefore, before doing the projects, I always use sandpaper to smooth out the rough surfaces on the wall. For large houses, you can also use a sanding machine to save time and get high efficiency.
By the way, I never forget to keep 80 grit sandpaper in my back pocket when starting any painting project.
Drop Cloths
Surely you do not expect your floor to be filled with drops of paint, right? Unless you want to refresh the storey, do not forget to use drop cloths to protect the floor and furniture during the painting process.
I usually use at least 4 feet of canvas to avoid dripping paint and make sure my movements are always careful. You know, dripping paint stains are annoying. A cotton drop cloth will be the best choice for you.
Painting Tape
Yes, I think the presence of masking tape is indispensable in painting house. Adhesive tape is used to seal on light switches, sockets, or areas where paint can stick to. When painting a wall, you can use a piece of tape on the edges to keep the paint straight and smooth.
The trick to removing the sticky tape without leaving ugly black marks is to wait for the paint to dry completely. Or you can rely on the dryer for added heat. I usually use green painting tapes for my job, and it’s useful.
Paintbrush
Basically, the brush head is divided into two types: one type made of natural animal hair, and the other made of synthetic filament. I often use the paintbrush to paint on irregular surfaces. In addition, the paintbrush is a useful tool to sweep dust, stains out of corners and cracks. I think a 1 – 1/2 inch brush is suitable for painting work.
Step Ladder
Do not risk your health by standing on chairs/tables to paint. Invest in buying a ladder. A folding aluminum ladder is ideal for storage in a warehouse when not in use. Note, do not use when the ladder loses rubber safety soles at the bottom of the ladder.
Respirator
We all know that most industrial paints use a lot of solvents, chemicals, and volatile organic compounds. So when you paint, you may inhale these toxic gases, or toxins can harm to the body. That is why I always have a respirator at home.
These masks are usually light and compact, with a face-tight design. The filters can also be removed and replaced easily and quickly. In addition to protecting our respiratory tract, respirators also protect eyes from the effects of chemicals.
Electric Screwdriver
A right screwdriver will save you time. In my opinion, an electric screwdriver or drill has the same great use. According to many users, including me, pivoting handle electric screwdriver is the perfect choice for you.
Sprayer
In fact, hand-held paint sprayers are no longer a strange item in life thanks to their low cost and ability to paint faster compared to traditional hand painting tools.
It must be my favourite. When using it, the pressure created by the nozzle helps the paint to adhere better to all types of surfaces. Thanks to it, the paint is smoother and can protect painted surfaces better.
Also, you can use the sprayer to paint a large area faster without too much effort. Because of that, you will not waste time moving from one location to another.
Roller Bucket
You all know that cleaning after work is always a concern. The rollers you have used will not be completely clean. To overcome this situation, you can put it in the 5-gallon roller bucket. Also, when buying this type of bin, buy extra rolling trays as you will need them for the break.
A Few Other Tools
In addition to the necessary items, as I mentioned above, during the painting process, you may need a few following tools:
- Sponge: I use it to clean the wall before painting. You know, sanding still leaves a thin layer of paint powder.
- Hammer: You will need a metal hammerhead. For house painting, it’s like having a great third hand, so don’t forget to put it in your back pocket when painting.
- Caulking Gun: You will need it to fill a few holes in the painted surface to make the work perfect.
In addition, in the process of painting, I sometimes use tools such as: can opener, stairwells, plaster, wire brush and so on. If you equip them all, the process would be much easier.
How Do You Avoid Lap Marks When Painting?
Have you ever finished painting and thought that you did the perfect job except for lap marks? I used to go crazy with those annoying marks.
A significant mistake that you make to causelap marks is to allow the painted areas to dry before painting on adjacent areas. It will create overlapping edges which are very unsightly.
Another issue you should consider is the quality of the paint. Yes, I want to save money on home remodeling. However, a paint bucket with poor quality will make your home less aesthetic, and it will even affect your health.
Besides, a problem to keep in mind is not to paint a porous wall as it will make the paint dry too quickly. Moreover, decorating the house in direct sunlight or in windy conditions will lead to the same problem.
One final mistake you might make is not paying attention to the wet film thickness that the manufacturer has suggested earlier. Ignoring the producer’s information will cause you some problems. So let’s read the instructions carefully before use.
To avoid such errors, I had to find a few necessary information from various sources. And my first lesson is to take note of painted areas and manage wet edges. That is, I will apply the paint only on unpainted areas and then apply another layer on the whole painted surface if I want a thick layer. With this technique, you will get a much more uniform and smooth painted surface.
The second thing to note is to make sure that the amount of paint you prepare is sufficient. If you are using a roller with too much or too little paint on it, you will probably get ugly lap marks.
When you have to paint in interrupted places like windows, doors or corners, use brushes instead. And don’t make the same mistake as me, you should keep painting with a brush while the paint is still wet.
After knowing my mistake, I always use top quality acrylic paints to paint my house. The composition of the paint is highly stable so that dents can be covered well. In addition, using high-quality paint can help me feel assured about my health.
And finally, if you want a non-porous painted surface, apply one coat first. Thanks to this, you might have a cover of uniform porosity and prevents the paint from drying too quickly.
How Do You Avoid Roller Marks When Painting?
Another unwanted result after painting your home yourself is roller marks.
So how to avoid this? Here are some useful ways I’ve learned from professional painters. You should make sure your roller contains a moderate amount of paint when doing its job. You know, if the roller has too much paint, the excess amount will accumulate on its edges and form a thick line behind. However, do not worry, use that roller to roll another layer on the areas which have ugly lines to smooth the paint. Then get the new paint amount to continue the work.
To get a nice and even work, I will start from the bottom, roll up and stop at a few inches from the ceiling. After that, I will roll back and forth at an average speed to limit the accumulation of paint to dry between strokes. However, don’t try to create perfect work; instead, try to keep everything stable.
In addition, roller cover is an essential part of your painting. I know it would be great if we could save money on roller covers and be able to throw them away after finishing. However, an unqualified roller cover will not contain enough paint needed for your job. It will result in an extended amount of time for you to finish the pain, and the layers will also be inconsistent.
Don’t forget to keep the edges wet if you want to get things done early and have time to rest. New layers of paint overlap with old ones that are still wet will give you an aesthetic result.
Take advantage of the ladders. You know, rollers don’t fit the corners. I chose the solution of the brushes, and the result was the brush marks left on the painted surface. If right after that, you let the rollers go into the corners as far as possible, it will help you to paint more smoothly and cover those areas well. Note that choose a roller filled with paint and use them with care.
After you finish painting the first layer, you will still have to roll another layer to smooth the paint. When you are finished smoothing, lightly touch the wall. This step will help you to check the fineness of the paint effectively. Remember: don’t press too hard. Otherwise, you’ll have to keep rolling.
Another thing you need to adhere to when preparing for work is smoothing the wall. The sandpaper is a useful tool for this step. Even professional painters have a hard time dealing with uneven walls. Also, fill the nail holes and remove the old paint residues and wallpaper carefully.

Painting tools will support you so much if you have plan to repair your house that a task takes a lot of time and energy.
When you start, you will realize that everything will not be as simple as you think. However, if you carefully study the paint techniques as well as prepare all the tools, it will be a whole lot easier.
